Principles of Design:
Proportion

Proportion is the comparison of size between different individual parts as well as parts to the whole of the artwork.  Proportion is considering what part is bigger than or smaller than something else.  Sometimes the notion of scale is also discussed when proportion is being considered.  For example if a person was drawn with a hand as big as the rest of their body the proportion would not be to the scale of real life.  The hand could also be described as "out of proportion."

The remains of a sailboat lie on the forest floor - mostly intact. There are even the tattered remains of two of the sails. An enormous tree has sunken its roots right down through the body of the ship. A vine is wrapped around the ship from bow to stern. Brilliant sun beams reach down through the foliage. The painting is framed by the tree leaves.
"Sunken Relic" depicts an ancient forest.  The largest positive space is the tree farthest to the left.  The brown barked trees, although staggered and seen at different distances, appear to be in proportion to one another.  However if the ship is as big as a four masting sailing vessel would be in real life, the same trees seem to be out of proportion as they are so much larger than it.  This may suggest that if the trees really are that much larger than the ship that they are very, very old.

A human girl whispers in the ear of a giant yellow and red dragon. The dragon lies around the mast of a massive sailing ship. On the deck the broad planks show the whirls of the wood they were cut from. The deck is bordered by a wooden railing. Stairs lead up to a higher deck and a golden doorway marks the entranceway to below deck. While the ship is sized for the dragon a treasure chest and a piano proportionate to the human can be seen. Portholes line the bottom of the painting reflecting blue sky and the pink and blue hued clouds of a fantasy world.
In "Dragon Ship" the dragon has emphasis due to its colour and its size.  It is the largest component on the ship.  The girl whispering in its ear is the smallest.  Two separate scales of proportion exist on the ship: one for the girl and one for the dragon.  There are two sets of stairs side by side, one sized for each passenger.  The deck, the mast, and the portholes are to the scale of the dragon.  The treasure chest, piano, and railing are to the scale of the girl.
