Principles of Design:
Emphasis

Contrast

Contrast

Emphasis is an area in the artwork that draws the eye the most.  It can be created by the use of all or some of the elements and principles of art.  This area is the focal point of the artwork and stands out from the rest of the piece to some degree.

A red winged blackbird sits by a sunny marsh. Individual wing feathers are visible as well as the fuzzy down on the bird’s head. The joints on its bird feet and its claws can be seen tightly wrapped around the small branch it’s perched on. Cattails line the back of the marsh in amongst other grasses. The two cattails in the foreground are highly textured.
The emphasis in "Red Winged Blackbird" is the bird, especially the red and yellow on its wing.  The emphasis is given using many of the elements and principles of design.  The colour red is only used on the bird and the yellow on its wing is more intense then elsewhere in the work.  The bird is where the use of line and texture is most detailed.  The birds body is the darkest value in the piece and the yellow on its wing is the lightest.  This gives it a lot of contrast.  The bird is a large positive space in against the backdrop of a large negative space.  In proportion to the work it is the largest object.  The movement of the piece circles the eye back to bird.  The red winged blackbird is the clear focal point.
