Elements of Design:
Form and Shape

Colour

Colour

Form is a three dimensional object created by an encompassing line and tints and shades to create the illusion of depth.

A human girl whispers in the ear of a giant yellow and red dragon. The dragon lies around the mast of a massive sailing ship.
"Dragon Ship: Close-Up" depicts a dragon curled around the mast of a sailing ship.  The dragon is defined by a line which encompasses  its yellow scaled body and red wings.  Outside of this form is the brown of the deck and mast.  The dragon is given volume with tints and shades.  Some scales are highlighted and shadows are used to create further depth.

Shape is a two dimension object created by an encompassing line.  In some artworks the image is flat and lacking depth.  In this case objects are more correctly referred to as shapes.

Four different Celtic Knot patterns and a stylized Tiger
"Celtic Knot Tiger" is a very flat piece with little depth.  The blue tiger has a shape outlined by white lines.
